Highlights

  • Sony has announced that the PS5 is now the developer's most profitable console generation throughout its 30-year gaming history.
  • The PS5 has reportedly nearly matched the PS4 in sales with $106 billion USD, while boasting a higher operating income at $10 million USD.
  • The historic success of the PS5 comes after Sony was forced to surmount major supply issues with the console early on in its life.

A recent report from Sony reveals that the PS5 has become the most profitable console generation in the history of the gaming juggernaut. Sony has stood as one of the biggest names in gaming since the Japanese company first debuted the original PlayStation console in 1994 and 1995. The developer has sold hundreds of millions of consoles throughout the past three decades, with the PS2 even becoming the best-selling console of all-time with over 160 million units sold. Now, a recent report shows major success for Sony in the PS5 generation.

Sony's current console has seen plenty of high-profile releases since the PS5's initial debut in 2020. The studio's first-party developers have launched a variety of major games across multiple genres, with games like God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 becoming best-sellers. The console also overcame early supply shortages, which plagued both the PS5 and its biggest competitor in the Xbox Series X and S. A report from Sony now reveals that the PS5's success has reached new heights for the company.

PS5 Exclusive Becomes Top-Selling Game in US

A Sony PS5 exclusive becomes the top-selling game in the US this April, beating popular titles like Helldivers 2 and Sea of Thieves.

As reported by PushSquare, a recent business presentation from Sony has revealed statistics showing the PS5 is the company's most profitable console generation. According to charts detailing the developer's sales, the PS5 has nearly matched the PS4 during the four years since its release, racking up $106 billion USD in sales. The company's operating income also shows an all-time high during the PS5 era, with the PS5's operating income of $10 billion edging out the PS4's $9 billion. The report comes not long after Sony announced the PS5 had passed 50 million units sold in December.

PS5 is Sony's Most Profitable Console Generation

The massive success of the PS5 for Sony comes as the developer had to surmount significant hardships early on in the console's life. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S were hit by major shortages following their respective launches, due to a lack of supply of essential chips and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sony only announced as recently as the start of 2023 that the PS5 shortage was finally over, with fans now able to find the console more easily in stores.

The PS5's new accomplishments come amid a jam-packed year for the Sony console filled with big releases. The launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth earlier this year made major waves for the console, with Rebirth reviewing highly but ultimately falling short of Square-Enix's lofty sales expectations. 2025 also looks to be a big year for the console, with Death Stranding 2 debuting as a PS5 exclusive and Grand Theft Auto 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds as highly-anticipated multi-platform games. Sony looks to continue to build on the unprecedented success the PS5 has already seen.
