June 7 is Going To Kick Off a Massive Weekend for the Industry (2024)

Friday, June 7 is the day that Summer Game Fest 2024 airs, in turn kicking off what should be a massive weekend for the video game industry. June has always been an exciting time for the video game industry. Prior to Summer Game Fest, E3 took place in June for decades, treating fans to blockbuster hardware and game announcements that shook the industry to its core.

E3 doesn't really exist anymore, and in its place is Summer Game Fest. The Geoff Keighley-hosted event looks to fill the void left by E3, with game publishers utilizing it to make big announcements and release "world premiere" trailers, not unlike what happens with Keighley's Game Awards every year. Summer Game Fest is coming back for 2024, and this year's event will help kick off another E3-sized weekend for the gaming industry.

Summer Game Fest will take place on Friday, June 7 at 2:00pm PT. The event is expected to feature a variety of announcements from over 55 companies, with heavy hitters like 2K, Capcom, Epic Games, PlayStation, Xbox, and more already confirmed. Most of the games that will be shown at Summer Game Fest 2024 are being kept secret, but fans do know that the show will feature a closer look at Batman: Arkham Shadow, a VR game set in the beloved Arkham universe that is set to release later this year as a Meta Quest 3 exclusive.

But Summer Game Fest on June 7 is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to major gaming events taking place that weekend. Devolver Digital's annual presentation will take place on the same day, with a start time of 5:00pm PT. The Future of Play Direct will be on June 8 at 8:00am PT, with the Wholesome Direct taking place at 9:00am PT. The Latin American Games Showcase will be June 8 at 10am PT, with a special Women-Led Games Summer game Fest presentation scheduled to take place the same day at 11:30aM PT. June 8 will also play host to the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, kicking off at 12:00pm PT.

The next heavy hitter event will happen on June 9 with the Xbox Games Showcase at 10:00am PT. The showcase will be immediately followed by a Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 deep dive. Fans don't know with 100% certainty what to expect from the Xbox Games Showcase, but leaks from reputable insiders have suggested that a new Doom game is going to be announced, alongside other heavy hitters like Gears of War 6 and some kind of Blue Dragon-related reveal. Whether there's truth to those rumors or not remains to be seen, but fans can tune in to the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9 to find out. Assassin's Creed Shadows is an open world game set in Japan, something that AC fans have been asking to see for years. No in-game footage has been shown so far, but that will change on June 10.

Now, some may be wondering where PlayStation and Nintendo fit in all of this. PlayStation is confirmed to be one of the partners for the Summer Game Fest event on June 7, but it has traditionally hosted its own event around this time of year as well. Nothing official has been announced at the time of this writing, but the latest rumors suggest that a PlayStation State of Play could be taking place as early as this week, with a larger showcase set for September. As far as Nintendo goes, a Nintendo Direct has already been confirmed for June 2024, but its timing has yet to be announced. It's entirely possible it will take place the same weekend as Summer Game Fest, but it's also possible it will take place a little later in the month. Historically, the big Nintendo E3-level events have happened last, and so chances are that trend will continue in 2024.

Nintendo has yet to announce the specific date and time that its big June 2024 Direct will take place, but it has given fans an idea of what they can expect from the show. Nintendo has dashed any hopes of seeing the Switch successor console at the June 2024 Direct, but it has confirmed that the event will focus on Switch games releasing in the latter half of 2024. Since Nintendo's late 2024 slate is bare at the moment, fans of the company will definitely want to tune in to the event to see what's in store.
